Llwyndewi nature reserve appeal

A landscape full of possibility

High above Ammanford, at the source of the Afon Llwchwr, lies Llwyndewi: 59 hectares of rolling hills, wetlands and young woodland on the brink of something extraordinary.

This is a place ready to recover. Ready to flourish. And it could become something truly special, with your help.

Llwyndewi is Wild Cymru’s first nature reserve.

What happens next starts here, and starts with you.

Llwyndewi is already rich in life – but it is fragile.

Years without careful management mean its full potential is still out of reach. Without intervention, habitats will decline, and some of its most vulnerable species could be lost.

A landscape waiting to flourish

And yet, hope is still here:

  • Marshy grasslands and wet woodland endure
  • Glow worms still flicker on summer evenings
  • Nightjars could return to breed
  • Willow tits – one of Wales’ most threatened birds – could yet find refuge

With the right care, this can once again become a thriving sanctuary – shaped by restoration, patience and respect for nature.

Please donate today

Every pound donated to this appeal will be spent on supporting wildlife and nature on this important reserve.

But we must act now. A critical moment – and a unique opportunity

We have already begun.

Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund, over £90,000 has been awarded to help us understand Llwyndewi and plan its recovery.

Next spring, we will submit an ambitious bid for £650,000 to bring that vision to life.

But we cannot unlock this funding without match support.

This is where you come in.

Your donation today will:

  • Strengthen our funding bid
  • Show that people believe in this place
  • Help bring large-scale restoration within reach

And importantly, even if our bid is unsuccessful, every pound you give will still go directly into restoring Llwyndewi.

What your donation will do

Every gift makes a real, practical difference on the ground:

  • £5 – equips volunteers tackling invasive species
  • £20 – installs a nest box for Pied Flycatchers
  • £100 – restores 150m² of meadow with wildflowers
  • £200 – funds a stock gate for conservation grazing

These may seem like small steps, but together, they rebuild a living, breathing landscape.

A reserve rooted in its landscape. And shaped by the people who care about it.

Reconnecting people

Llwyndewi isn’t just for wildlife — it’s for people too.

Over the coming years, we will:

  • Reintroduce conservation grazing to shape habitats naturally
  • Restore species-rich grasslands and wetlands
  • Tackle invasive, non-native plants
  • Support species like glow worms and willow tits to recover
  • Create opportunities for local people to connect with nature
